kenwood transceivers

Hello, I was wondering if any of you have opinions on the kenwood line of transceivers for receive, transmit audio etc?

I am considering either a TS 940s or a TS 830s or ???

Would like to get a ham license in the very near future. Have been doing a little studying, but need to get into it more in depth. Also, are the formentioned transceivers capable of being modified to work 11 meters?

Thanks, Hossless

I have basically the same questions as Hossless. I have been considering either the TS-850s or TS-870s. I've been doing a lot of research on the two. TS-850 seems to have an awesome receiver without DSP. As the 850 gets older, there seems to be quite a few common problems with the older serial numbered models. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my last statement and I apologize, but that is what I find in my extensive searches. The newer 870 has DSP and is still is in production. My main desire is to work HF. I don't think I'll regret not getting one of the all band rigs. No matter what, it looks like it's going to be a little expensive, either maintaining an older rig or buying a newer one. All suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Doc, I am not quite ready to buy, but when I do, I won't be able to spend a whole bunch of money. I'll check into the 940's and 850's.

Also, any onpinions on the newer, but not the most recent yaesus and icoms? Will eventually be able to spend somewhere around $700 give or take. Want great rx, loud clean tx on both am and ssb.

Hey Triple J, you say the Kenwood isn't as hot on am as the Galaxies, Connex's etc?

Hope you enjoy your new toy!!

Re: kenwood

Anyway, gotta figure out what I want to do.

Re: Kenwood

And to make it even tougher...Remember that what you hear and what they say they are running may not be "all" of what they have. Unless you really want to get deep into how you sound, most all HF rigs will sound decent and have much better receivers than a CB or Export radios do. My advice is to look around and see what is selling in your price range. This will narrow it down some and then you can start sorting out those for features you want, sound etc. Then....it's back to finding a mic that works best for your voice with the radio you have. You may find you want 2 mic.s..1 for rag chewing and another for DX'in or maybe a dual element like the heil gold line? For me, I like my FT-990 with the factory hand mic in the "high"setting for DX'in(shootin across the water) and a Sure mic and 8 band EQ for shootin the breeze localy (U.S.). This set up is plenty for me but some folks really get into the sound they are putting out.Take a look at this guy's set up w3oz.netfirms.com/audiosetup9.htm#need

Hey Paul, I don't leave Guitar until about 7 pm or so.

What time do you usually head back south?

Later, Hossless
