I purchased a used VX-8R for the dual band functionality, but also because this radio is APRS capable. Now here's the hard part. I have a GPS unit installed on it, but I'm not quite sure I'm using APRS right.

First, is the modem limited to 1200 baud for APRS? That seems really slow, but it may be alright if that's what APRS uses.

Second, when I tune to the APRS frequency (144.390), I get static (or transmissions?) every 2-3 seconds. The manual tells me to turn down the squelch, which makes it really annoying. Is there a way to fix this?

Third, I was able to show my location only once on OpenAPRS.net. Is it because I can't hit the receiver somewhere, or is it a setting I have on my radio that I'm missing?

Finally, what really is the point of APRS? It seems like a complicated way to report position.

Thanks, from someone new to ham radios!

Well, I'll take a shot at these questions

First, is the modem limited to 1200 baud for APRS? That seems really slow, but it may be alright if that's what APRS uses.

Yes, APRS only needs 1200 baud

Second, when I tune to the APRS frequency (144.390), I get static (or transmissions?) every 2-3 seconds. The manual tells me to turn down the squelch, which makes it really annoying. Is there a way to fix this?

You need to turn APRS MUTE parameter ON. That will silence the background APRS traffic you're hearing.

Third, I was able to show my location only once on OpenAPRS.net. Is it because I can't hit the receiver somewhere, or is it a setting I have on my radio that I'm missing?

If it showed it once, then you probably have it set correctly. You may need to set your radio to beacon more often, however. Depending on your location and where you're traveling around to, you may not have constant coverage by a digipeater/igate. Even in a big city, that can be a problem with HTs.

Finally, what really is the point of APRS? It seems like a complicated way to report position.

It basically is a way to report position and send text messages to other stations over the air. It's useful when you're trying to coordinate an event where you have multiple people that you need to know exactly where they are. It can be used just for fun with friends or even for ECOM communications. Like a lot of things in Ham Radio, it is sort of experimental in nature.

I also found this response really useful! I have been a little in the dark on setting up APRS on my recently acquired VX-8DR... The Yaesu manual is sort of ok, but nothing like talking to someone who has been there and done it!
Currently operating portable VK4 and was just about to re-tweak the settings for VK land...

I've been reading about the MarsCap Mod, and would like to know just what the new freq range would be AFTER the Mod? Anyone?
