AMP.

I have always had very limited success with a pre-amp of any kind. On a very quiet night on SSB sometimes they help....alittle. I have always preferred a quality radio that has an RF gain control. Then make sure the radio has a properly aligned receive or maybe even a receive mod done. Thats pretty much it.

Receive in the HF range generally has about a 3 to 4 db noise floor from external sources in most locations.
If you hear an increase in receive noise when an antenna is connected, you don't need a preamp.
Adding a preamp increases the same noise you hear as well as the signal.
There is no change in 'signal to noise ratio' therefore no benifit.
Only thing you will see is an increase is S meter reading that still includes all the same noise along with the signal..
Only a receiver that has lack of sensitivity would benifit from a preamp.
As to the noise figure of a preamp, even here, if the receive noise level is 3db, a 1db noise figure of the preamp still wont help because it's only the preamp noise internal generation performance sensitivity.
The external noise level is still far above this level.

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
