locked band repeat

1. The V71 will NOT transmit a band 'B' UHF frequency if band 'A' is also a UHF frequency. The radio is just not equipped to do it.

2. The V71 is an Amateur band Radio, not a GMRS band radio, even if you did modify the radio to operate outside of the Amateur
.... band frequencies, it is NOT legal and it would be unwise to tell your scouts that this is OK to do <gotproof>

3. Train your scouts in the merit badges that will allow them to become licensed Amateurs, or have them obtain GMRS licenses and
.... use the GMRS band

4. Simmer down, we're not the enemy that you were trained to kill.

Now, let all this through your thick skin, or is it your thick skull

The way around the single band repeat issue is to use TWO radios.

One receives UHF and re-transmits on VHF, the other one receives VHF and re-transmits on UHF again.

... or better yet, just buy a simplex repeater. It receives and records a transmission (up to 30 seconds) then retransmits the original transmission on the same frequency.

Connect it to one of your GMRS 'walkie talkies' and stick it someplace high enough to give you the coverage you need. You might need to power the radio and repeater from an external high capacity battery though. A 12v, 7Ah gel cell would probably keep the system live for a weekend (depending on actual usage) ;)
