I've been using a Wilson 1000 for about 5 or 6 years now. It's a good antenna, and it works fine. But it's a trunk mount antenna , and I recently got a new minivan. Trunk mount antennas don't go well with minivan's ... lol. I like the Wilson mobile antennas ... but I'm trying to find a shorter antenna that both transmits and receives really good ... like a Wilson 1000/5000 , or maybe better. So I'm looking for your opinions on what might be a good replacement ... if all else fails I could always just get a magnet mount. But I'd like a shorter antenna for the top of a minivan.

Wilson 500 mag mount would be a good choice,as I remember correctly it comes with a 57 in stinger, not as tall as the Wilson 1000, I used one as one my first CB antenna and it worked amazing......the only smaller choice would be the Wilson Lil Will and I personally would not recommend them as from what I have read , haven't gotten very good reviews, hope this helps...........

Minivan huh? I'd say check sirio performer 5000, and go to breedlove's website to check for mounting options .....excellent quality stuff, definitely worth a look.

I had good luck with Tram mag mounts in both the Tram 300 & Tram 3500 because they both have rubber protective cup on the bottom to protect your vehicles paint and if you mount them in the center of your roof you get the best radiation pattern from them. If you insist on a short antenna Tram 300 is the way to go but I did talk skip to Scotland with my Tram 3500. And on my car that I put in the garage sometimes I installed a Sirio Performer 5000 because it has a tip over mount for laying the antenna over. It also has the rubber protective cup on the bottom. Another great antenna is a K 40 but it is about the same length as the Tram 3500 without the rubber cup. Try this video for the heck of it and let us know what you choose.

I think you will find your solution between Mr. redbeast and Mr Flyboy50 recommendations. A Breedlove ball mount with a quick disconnect for a taller top loaded antenna or a Tram Mag Mount will do you well. Myself, I actually do believe the smaller Tram mag mount does better than my K30 or Lil-Wil from many CB radios past.

I started with a Lil Wil and hated it because I couldn't get the swr match to suit me but the Tram 300 put me right in business of being happy. And the crazy thing was they looked like the same antenna and I think the rubber cup from the Tram 300 fit the Lil Wil. Maybe I just got a bad Lil Wil but I bought 3 more Trams after that and I'm using all of them in different locations. I have 2 K40s and happy with those also. Funny how you can throw a mag mount on a piece of sheet metal and have a Quick temporary antenna. LOL

I figure I should mention this. A while back I had a 1994 Subaru Forester, the one that still looked boxy. It was a though decision, but one of the better ones related to CB that I had made over the years. Sparky talked me into this approach. Sparky sent me the genuine, "Skythumper" ball mount, this was probably 2009. Keep in mind I enjoyed the Skythumper brand name, however I should mention that most of the products were delete Pro-Comm and type on Skythumper. I installed a chromed ball mount at the driver rear fender in front of the tail light wrap around so I could access the connector in the same area as the tail light wiring. I had a few antennas that I switched off and on with a heavy quick disconnect. It could run the 102" whip and spring without issues. I mostly a 6.5 foot Francis on it. I had a shorter Skip Shooter tuned for it also. Once I had made the decision that I was keeping the vehicle til catastrophic failure so a hole in the body panel was a non-issue, plus Breedlove made nice aluminum covers for the ball mount holes if needed. I liked the sound of the receive with the big Francis 6.5 footer, it would have some low static. with the ball mount you can just remove what ever antenna you want to run before you enter a garage. The tuning will not be as easy as a quality mag mount in the center roof position, however it can run the big boys top loads, or the big steel.

If it wasn't for all the trees around here I would love to try a 102" whip around here like I had on my Volkswagen back in the 70s, but my Sirio Performer 5000 is smacking trees setting on top of my Chevy Cobalt now. When you get on the side streets and back roads around here they don't take care of the trees the way they should so I always have that on my mind. I don't think anyone will disagree the 102" whip is the best, but I have to compromise.
