Hi all, been away for a while and in the process I lost my login info. Thanks to CableGuy and AuduoShockWave for getting me back up. I truly appreciate you guys.

Today we have a Mark 8 (8 Tube - 17DQ6B) amplifier on the desk. Yes, I'm now starting to do little repairs on these, although I don't know much about them and I'm supposed to stay away from high voltage (heart problems from 3 massive widow maker heart attacks). Reason being, amp guys are limited around here that will work on them. The radio gig fizzled out because everyone around here is ditching these old radios for the new surface mount rigs.

Anyway, here is the amp and details of issues.
Note: the pics have red circles around suspect and obvious damaged parts.

The issues are:
Input match was a 5 between the radio and the amp. I adjusted the air variable capacitor in the second pic and that brought the SWR down to around a 2.5 between the radio and the amp, but I can't get it any lower.

Output power is around 500w pep at first key, but gradually drops to settle at around 350w PEP after 10 seconds of holding the key with modulation.

Input power - 3w carrier, 45w PEP swing.

Above results are in high gear with super mod (SM) turned on, or off. Low gear does the same thing but with lower wattage of course.

Most of the overheated resistors in the top pic I have laying around (470 ohm, yellow, violet, brown) but the two cooked ones, left of center circled in red and one next up against the second tube on the right/bottom circled in red.

Any better eyes out here see anything else I didn't catch? Any insight on the two cooked resistors values?

Those look like the kind of resistor that gets toasted when a tube breaks down. Not so different from the 10-ohm base resistor on a 2SC2879.

I'd be wondering how many of those tubes show that purple internal glow from gas in the vacuum when you key it. Its a favorite way for 60 year-old tubes to fail.

Maybe they're newer than that, but that type tube was used in monochrome console televisions. Been a while since those were made.

So who was the evil genius who made this one? Makes me think he studied at the feet of Ray Felts, the Elkin guy.

Mark 8 was made by Elkin (Ray Phelps). Yea, and running a constant 50 to 70 watts through it didn't help it none neither, lol....
 
Snag (Snaggletooth) passed away in 2021, he was one of the best in NC for years.
Then Ray Phelps passed away a couple years ago.
Now, Screwdriver is on his way out.

Those were the 3 best around here. Basically only ones around here.
 
The 470 ohm resistors (some of which are circled in red across the tubes) come from pin 4 over to pin 8. From my understanding pin 4 is plate and pin 8 is G3 (I assume is ground 3). I also noticed a wire wound resistor on one of the top caps looks overheated. Would one or several of those 470 ohm resistors being overheated cause an impedance mismatch between radio and amp?

Um, the cap on the top is the anode (plate). Pin 4 is G2, the screen grid. Runs with a positive DC voltage. Maybe 100 Volts maybe more. Pin 8 is the cathode and G3 both. Goes to ground through a 12-ohm resistor, looks like. Having a hard time orienting pin numbers in the pic. The key slot is hidden under a part on most of the sockets. Until you sort the gassy tubes it will probably keep smoking resistors.
