The best advice on this radio I can give is DONT remove the limiter, the thing will sound like garbage on SSB. Also, the choice of the regulator has nothing to do with it, it has to do with board design. They are fine, stock off the shelf, but contrary to popular belief, they need some stabilization once they are modified.

I just picked up one of these a few weeks ago to mess with in my Jeep. I got it because it's small (you need that in a Jeep), but still has AM/SSB. I replaced a Magnum 257 with it. The Midland is a decent little CB for what it is. It has a much lower noise floor than the 257 did, and does the same power output. It doesn't go to the "0" frequencies, but if you open the clarifier, you could probably slide there (haven't checked on a Freq counter yet). The radio sounds decent when using it with a better mic. The only thing I really don't like about the radio is that the memories don't remember your operating mode, only the frequency. Oh yeah, and after you mod it, the mode selector will allow you to select FM, but there is no FM in the radio!! Anyway, I couldn't handle how noisy the 257 was anymore, and this radio fits my needs very well.
