Don't go messing with those adjustments to get more power. The power adjustment is a ceramic cased wire wound pot mounted on the chassis. It controls the voltage to the finals. THAT is the proper way to more power out of tbat radio. It's. No powerhouse but should do over 20 watts easily and maybe 25. You should be able to see the pot clearly from under the board or look for a small slotted screwdriver adjustment mounted on the metal chassis somewhere around the power supply section I tbink. God it's been almost 30 years since I was inside my 13-898B.

well glad you caught me as this was fixing to happen with the vfo check.
every cb trick web site has the same thing listed for adjusting it "i checked" .
i was gonna play with the am power and mainly the modulation,as this is the sickest radio ive ever had to be honest,and i dont no much at all..you no that tho lol.
i will look for the external adjustment you mentioned on the back and if not there i will leave it be for now.
"thought i looked before since my tram had tune and load there" but will look again.
 
It's not on the back it is on the steel part of the chassis to the side of the main board. I think it is near the power supply section. If you can, take the cover off and take a closeup picture of the metal chassis. I can point it out for you.
 
If I remember right, it will be easy to spot, big rheostat looking VR bolted to the side of the chassis.
Remember that if you set the dead key to high, you leave no headroom for the radio to properly modulate the carrier.
Also, cut didoes and removed transistors are listed in a lot of these online so called "tune-up guides".....there are much better ways to achieve good modulation without defeating the AMC/ALC in the radios.

thanks fellas,with the online directions i was only gonna do the modulation and am deadkey tune up..but it those numbers they give lead to the wrong thing,well thats just wrong imo..
but id rather listen to you guys and get it better.
i think i remember seeing this ceramic post/pot with the wraped wire when i was cleaning it a couple days aga in the inside.
so this one ceramic post will adjust my am power"have 2 watts now" and also the modulation with one adjustment?
this radio is not compariso to the ole d201 tram.

and when i adjust this spot when i get max deadkey watts i should back it off by how much?

like I said it's been 30 years or more since I was inside my 13-898B but IIRC that rheostat controls both AM and SSB power output as it adjusts the voltage to the finals. I seem to remember something around 8-10 watts AM carrier and about 25 watts or a bit more on SSB. I did not do anything else to it except add a Turner +3B microphone and that radio sounded great with it. Got lots of good unsolicited reports.

i was even looking for the L112 L113 L114 like the info said,for the heck of it and its def not in the top of my radio either.wasnt gonna do it just looking for the heck of it..
there a lot of small 1/4 inch square adjustment pot thingys on the right side up top but no numbers even come close to the numbers the cb tricks show.

i wouldnt think they would be in the bottom of the radio but going there now to check the vfo hook up i cant get working..
id love to adjust it while i have it all apart but not like it hard to get back into.
i will take bottom pics also.

I pulled the Sams for the 13-898B (#72), and there is no large wirewound rheostat that controls RF power. In fact, looking at the schematic and the alignment tables, there is NO rf power adjustment (per se) at all. Just tune the coils in the tx section for peak, and then detune L112 for 5 watts maximum (w/o modulation). SSB ALC - RV301, AM AMC - RV302

I checked the 13-898 in Sams # 62, and while it is very different circuit-wise, it also did not have the rheostat control that CK mentioned. I remember those large rheostats, but I believe they came later in the Midland 79-*** series.

Johnny9 - before you start tinkering with that old horse, get a copy of Sam # 72. Good luck & 73s.

def no adjustments in the bottom part..i no lot of folks like this radio,but i read many places that say it really lacked with low power and NO modulation at all..it def has good ears;)
so what you guys are finding may be true.
i will leave it at the 2-1/2 to 3 watts it seems to be doing and just keep listening for now..
in the top it has a couple blue adj pots and green and red iirc,but cant find any of the numbers mentioned at all on the top and i looked 3 times real good with magnified head gear.
heres a pic of the bottom and dust looking stuff that looks like a "whatever is leaking" and there a dozen or so like it but this is the worse ones by the stick if it shows up,maybe just dirty as it does wipe off?.and thanks for trying to help everyone.john
