I have found the Extreme 2018 to be the best on the NEW market in echo mics. Now I bought a Cobra 29LTD Classic that has a echo board installed in the radio that has a quality echo that just can't be compared to any echo mic in quality sound. I don't know what the maker of the echo board is in my Cobra but no matter how you set it you have complete comprehension of what you are saying which can not be said of any of the echo mics or boards.

Although I am not an AMer, but have installed echo boards for locals. Unless the echo board is a TRB-2 or 3, won't install them because the others sound crappy. The TRB-2/3 uses the SAME echo chip that the Xtreme2018 uses. It is very high grade; high fidelity. So, either use a TRB-2/3 or use an Xtreme2018 to get the same end result.
If the radio sounds crappy; then straighten that out first BEFORE blaming the TRB-2/3 or the Xtreme2018. IOW, don't let the radio be so over-modulated in the first place . . .
