Got a good buy on this radio (or so I thought). I knew the final had a bad rep, and sure enough, I received the radio, and no tx. Pulled the final, and it tested bad.
I sourced two replacements, threw one in, and I had tx. 3 swingin to around 6 on a.m. everything seemed fine. Flipped to lsb, keyed the mic, and got alot of static through the talkback on the ext.speaker. Gave it a aauuudddio and poof...nothin. Back to no tx.
Pulled the final, and it tested good. For the hell of it, I tried the other final, and still nothin.
My next thought was to check the driver.. but I dont know where it is lol.

Also, the side of the chassis, where the audio chip, and Im guessing the a.m. regulator? and voltage regulator? Gets very very warm, just sittin at idle in rx.

I cant find a schematic for this radio, so im guessin its still a big secret. But if anyone can point me in the right direction as to the location of the driver, or add any extra insight to this issue, I'd much appreciate it.

Got it used - eh?
Guys turn up the AM modulation and end up sending distortion into the final, and it collapses. You said that the AM Regulator on the side of the chassis is getting hot/very warm? Well; that happens when the AM Modulation pot on the board has been turned up too high. Its product gets sent downstream and >poof<. Power + Distortion = too much for the final.

Otherwise, these radios are fairly solid, so long as some golden screwdriver monkey doesn't get in there and mess it all up. Local op has two of these radios (stock), and both of them still work well after over a year so far - and counting. Sounds real good at my end . . .

I dunno robb, maybe... It doesnt look like its been touched. Its looks like new, most likely been ran as a base, got the stick on feet on the bottom case.

3w swingin to 6 on AM, doesnt give me the impression its been turned up. But I wont really know unless I get 'er fixed I guess.
But I get what your sayin...

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
