Bad/cold solder joints, we think.

I went in to fire the 2600 up and NO TX!! -again-

I called a local friend and he said solder joints. Well, I took the cover off the radio and while keyed up I pressed down on the solders with my finger in different areas, to no avail. Now I moved to the area covering the solders where the chipswitch etc is located, when I pushed down on the chipswitch the radio tx'd. Where might a bad/cold solder joint be somewhere under the chipswitch area that could be causing the transmit problem?

Thanks, Hossless

Hi

Well...

The Microprocessor board has both top and bottom traces and some connect through circuit via's and some through lead holes.

It is possible the intermittent is in the area of the Micro Socket.

many of the top board traces connect to the socket. If the through holes were damaged during removal of the original Microprocessor

they may not be soldered to the Socket on the top side of the PCB.

Some of the traces connect on the top and bottom of the board and rely on the connection thru the Socket pins.

THe socket pins are shanked so it is possible that the pin is sitting on the trace and completing the circuit connection but is not soldered, so with heat and cooling and normal expansion and contraction, is lifting off the top pad and opening the circuit.

I would take out the Chipswitch, and examine the Socket's top PCB connections and you should be able to figure out which pins go where and OHM the traces out from Socket to component and see if there is an intermittent.

I have had to carefully carve the insides of the plastic on a socket and touch up the solder on a radio that had similar problems in the past. (the previous tech had added jumper wires to try to fix it - I just cleaned it all up and resolderd top and bottom for better connections)

I can still work on the radio for you if you want me to do it.

Let me know.

Roger

10-4 Roger, I need this radio to finally be AOK. I'll send it to you and have you check it out instead of possibley making things worse. I'll get it out tomorrow. I'll e-mail you later today, and I'll put a note in with the radio what I'd like done.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
