Hi guys!
I bought a very clean, used Cobra 29 LTD Classic(Nov 04) for pretty cheap off craigslist. It appeared to work okay at the guy's house but when I got home and hooked it up to test and 'tweek' it, it doesn't seem to work properly. I hooked up a Barjan whip and powered it up with a 3 amp PS. I don't seem to be modulating. Nothing looks burnt, nothing is loose/disconnected inside, I can't see any grounded wires and I didn't see any cold solder joints. It comes on normally with a bit of a pop. I don't hear much traffic either and I'm only 1.5 miles from the interstate and a truck stop. Sometimes I hear some traffic for a very brief time(strong signals?). Yes, I adjusted the squelch.
I then tried to calibrate... switched to CAL, keyed mic and tuned, switched to SWR(got a 3) and spoke with no apparent modulation. Needle barely moved. I hooked up a PA speaker and got some feedback and very quiet voice came through. I turned the Dynamike all the way up and the feedback increased and my voice got slightly louder but not the volume I expected.
I'm wondering where I should go from here. I have a couple of semesters of electrical engineering school and fair electronics knowledge. I've been reading many posts and will continue reading but, if you have some directed help I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Tom
