New Radio Squeals With Hand Mic Only ??

Hey gang,

There's good news and bad news. Got the new Magnum Omega Force S45 in today. 11 meter conversion super easy, no problem.

Has two mic jacks. Left side is 6 pin stock mic. Right side is 4 pin Cobra/Uniden/Galaxy wiring.

With either of two different desk power mics, a Galaxy and an Astatic....works fine no problems.

However the stock hand mic squeals out the yang even with power & mic gain turned all the way down. Took mic plug apart and no wires are touching each other or the the plug body. Both observation and ohm meter testing. All looks good there. Also...what's the reason for being 6 wire-pin? Doesn't matter if other mic is plugged in or not.

Anyone know what might be causing the stock hand mic to squeal like this?

Otherwise seem happy with the OF so far. Everything else seems to be working okay, advertised power levels ect....mucho features. Mosfets, Blue display, Switchable Top Gun Modulator and Digital Turbo Echo. Also appears to have a light Talkback built in. Hate that. Nothing mentioned in manual or ads re: even coming with talkback. Any one know how to remove?

My stock mic doesn't ever squeal - unless I have the talkback way too loud. Yes, you can have both mics plugged in at the same time. But you can only use one at a time - of course.
pin 1=white
pin 2=blue
pin 3=red
pin 4=black
pin 5=shield
pin 6=brown
I think that you will really like this radio. I really appreciate mine. I wasn't too hip on having talkback in a radio. But hearing that cool echo coming thru and knowing how it sounds when adjusted when transmitted makes it OK - IMO. If you have any questions about your new OF, shoot me a PM.

The reason for the six wire pin - is that the mic will allow you to channe l up/down. Look at the face of the mic. It says 'Magnum'; but on either side of the word 'Magnum' there is an up and down arrow. Pushing on either arrow will allow you you channel up/down.
Nice!

Of course, the talkback is adjustable. It is the knob behind the clarifier. A little goes a long way with a D104. With the stock mic, you can turn it up quite a ways - so long as you are about 3 ft from the radio - or more...

Ah ha!! Thanks Rob, didn't notice the buttons on the front. Still will have to figure out the squeal problem.

You could be right Sonwatcher. When I feel like taking it apart again I'll check the wiring placement. Rare problem but could happen. Probably going to keep it on the base and use a desk mic on it that IS working, and keep the Galaxy 94HP out in the truck.

Now where'd all the DX go that was out here the last two days? Wanna work it out on SSB.

Thanks for the tip Beetle, I'll look inside the mic tomorrow and see if the connection came loose and ohm it out to the plug end. It's possible.

i agree with rob. i also own a magnum of.the talkback is adjustaBLE mine came
to me with it just cracked open its behind the clar. marked amt.
i love mine my only regret is not getting one SOONER

Cool, thanks for that Hotrod ! I am generally pretty happy with it after just a day.

I'll start making a list of tips

It's keying a whopping 60 on FM. I figure it should do the same on AM but they have the circuitry set up differently apparently. I'm aware of the low-power-to-full-swing for the TG Modulator mode, but in Standard TX mode, one would think that regular AM power & FM power would match up the same ??

Looked inside the mic this morning. Everything looks okay. All wires trace back to plug fine, no opens or shorts to other wires or to plug.

This is actual wiring on mic. This match up to yours?

1) White
2) Yellow - shield
3) Red
4) Black
5) Blue
6) Brown

Manual says this, doesn't state insulation color.

1) Audio
2) RX
3) TX
4) Up/Down
5) Ground
6) 13.8 v

There is line DC voltage from radio on 6

Still trying :headbang

There is one thing I see different in how you said it is wired and how the manual states it should be wired-- pin 2
