I know not having ssb makes it of no interest for many but for the regular Am/Fm user it's a good buy.

Yeah an Am fm export but with goodies that definitely outshine any of the ranger offerings in this power range, half the cost, and ready to talk right out of the box. I might get one just to try in the Semi truck at work.

Well I am sure they do the same thing other's do and just not populate those parts of the board that would hold the SSB componets. So I would not think of it as a new radio rather another model a family of radio's.

Figure out the parent board and you will have answered all of the questions you might have.

Most OEM's have one level of build quality and quality control unless they have some seperate branch that does aviation or space.

For instance take 1990's Toyota Lexus levels of quality, design, fit and fiish all of them where made at just one plant. You would not see that plant turning out Lexus level build quaility on the Lexus and then see them building an eccono car to 1980's Chrysler standards. Often staff at a plant will work multile jobs at a shop. You poison the well when you try to do theired levels of design or quality control the lower standard "that's good enough" culture will always infect the high standard and bring it down.

Usually when that sort of tear standard happens it happens when you have many plants and design studios thoughts of miles away and one will get infected. So good or bad most shops are 1 tier shops. There are exceptions but they are rare today.
