newbie to the cb scene for offroad use

i recently got in to the 4x4 world with some friends and we decided that some communication would be good so we are all getting cb's my current offroader is a 90 s-10 blazer.

this radio when not being used to offroad will be transfered to my daily driver which happens to be a 93 jimmy so basically identical vehicles.

i am looking at a cobra 18wxstII because it seems to be a fairly midrange piece and i have read alot about cobra being a good brand.... is this one worth while (havent seen any info in my searching here),

or should i go ahead with the cobra 29 or one of these other talked about units, ?

also antenna selection, i need some help there, ive read that mag mounts are a pain to get to work decent. this was my initial choice so that i could easily move it from truck to truck.

mounting on the offroader does not concern me (not supposed to be pretty just functional, so im thinkin a 102in on a rear bumper mount), now the daily vehicle i dont want to be too obnoxious looking

any help is greatly appreciated, this forum looks to be a good bunch<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">

Hey there, I have to agree with Gumball 1, a Cobra 29 with a Wilson 1000 Mag mount is a choice set up indeed.....You can't beat the overall AUDIO performance of a Cobra 29, especially properly tuned........Also, if you like to run SSB, a Cobra 148gtl is the next choice.........They are a tough radio that seems to take a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.......Also I agree with a good Noise cancelling mic (Road King 56) does the job just fine......Just my 2cts............73's

My only concern on the 102" whip for offroad use is the tendency to whack it on everything and thus on everyone around. I'm not sure what your 4x4 conditions are, but around here, unless you're in the desert, it's gonna always be whacking on something and then whipping back the other way. Some 4x4 clubs here don't even allow them on vehicles in the club because of the potential hazard to spotters. Something to think about....

You can always flex the antenna forward and tie it to something. My concern with that would be it catching on some sticks, brush (at least that's the way it is around here), then ripping something at the weakest point.
