So I've had my Yaesu FTDX-101MP for a couple of years. But I still revert to my barebones Elecraft K3. I didn't notice this i watched DX Commander's video about "Why i dont want an SDR radio".

So what nonSDR radios are still available?

Can one still get a Hilberling?

I asked Google's AI if the Kenwood TS-890 is an SDR radio.

No, the Kenwood TS-890S is not an SDR (Software Defined Radio) in the modern "direct sampling" sense. Instead, it uses a high-performance superheterodyne architecture.

Key technical distinctions of the TS-890S include:
  • Down-conversion Receiver: It uses a full down-conversion method with a first Intermediate Frequency (IF) of 8.248 MHz.
  • H-Mode Mixer: It features an H-mode mixer design with four fast digital switches for high signal-handling capability.
  • Hardware Filtering: It relies on narrowband crystal "roofing filters" (as narrow as 270Hz) to eliminate nearby interference before digital processing occurs.
  • DSP Utilization: While it is not a direct-sampling SDR, it uses advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for functions like IF filtering, noise reduction, and signal decoding.
  • SDR Integration: While the radio itself is a legacy-style receiver, it can be connected to an external SDR for use as a panadapter or via third-party SDR client software.
The TS-890 is a variant of the TS-990 but with only a single receiver.

I have spent many hours using the Flex 6600 and 6400 in CW contests. I still prefer my K3 and crystal filters.

Kenwood TS-590SG is still available new, and so is the Icom IC-718. Neither one is SDR.

On edit: I forgot to mention that the Kenwood is great for people that are blind. It has an add on VSG-1 (voice guide system) module that announces many of the key presses, frequency, S meter reading, etc. I found this out thanks to a female ham op in my local club.
