I have a Northpoint (Cherokee) CBS1000 with burned out meter lamps. Are they mounted outside of the meters over the top? It looks like it from some videos of the rig I watched but I am not certain. If I take the knobs and front panel off does that make them accessible to replace them? Also are they the same kind of lamp that light up the channel/frequency display (PL1 through 4)? I already have some of those. I may switch to LEDs if they are not too difficult to get to.

The meter lamps are the same as the rest of the lamps on the front PC board. You can replace them with LEDs.

The trick isn't that they're difficult to get to. It's that you don't have a lot of space to work with. The lamp leads are what supports them in their little holes. Each lead runs to a little solder pad on it's side of the hole and that's it.

You can get an LED with a resistor into the same footprint, it just requires a little creativity. If I could find mine, I'd take some pictures of how I did it.
