Old Handhelds Still Relevant?

I found a couple of these in the garage. My brother's I think. Keep for the zombie apocalypse or donate to Goodwill? Have handhelds become way better these days or are they incrementally improved?

In my mind all an HT has to do is xmit and have the code to bring up the repeater. Anything other than that is fluff and the older models work just fine.

Of course, you will have to obtain a Ham/Tech license to transmit with these radios; but that isn't a real problem to do.
Cost you some study time and a small fee for the license test; but worth it . . .
