I realize that I have to match the swr to the radio. I have a little swr meter that I use to do this. How about peak and tune on the radio itself? What will a peak and tune do for a new radio say a Uniden PC78LTW or a Grant? Is it somethin that all radios should have or just a way for a shop to make a couple of bucks? How do you know your radio was properly peaked and tuned and what should I expect from a peak and tune?

Thanks for the help

Thumbs, It definitely is a good idea to have it done, I am fairly ignorant about a lot of the technical aspects of it all.{I am learning a lot though} Every radio I have had peaked and tweaked there has been a noticeable difference both from my ears to the other persons also. Someone else that is better able to describe the benefits will check in.

TIP: ask around about a good tech, there are a lot of jacklegged "tech's" out there!

Thumbs1, most radios come from the facrory with just enough modulation to operate on. A good peak and tune will bring that modulation up to a level of optimum performance. On an AM radio the more the modulation the LOUDER you will sound, this does not mean your radio puts out more power it just utilizes the space on the carrier more efficiently,. but overmodulation taxes the radio and does nothing, you want optimum modulation. On SSB it will help fill the bandwidth wit more modulation, therfore giving the same effect. A good tech will also do a complete alignment to your radio (reciever and transmitter) so you will be broadcasting and recieving right on freqency. Very important for this to be done, if you are not on freq. then the peak and tune is useless. Old #7 is an awsome tech and a great guy who will make your radio sound great. Whoever you choose to do your work ask about the alignment, if it is not included in the Peak & Tune look else where.

Let me give you an example....

Texas Ranger 936 brought to me stock. Keyed 4w modulated 6w, modulation 60%. No clipping, just simple turn up the AMC and now 4w modulated 20w and 100% modulation. It was an incredible difference on the air.
