Hello All.. Just wanted to ask those that have been around Yaesu Radio's long is it better to run a power mic,Noise cancell or Stock mic on the FT 101e ? Havent realy got to use my 101e yet but would like to know what mic works best so to set something up on it soon..

They don't need a power mic. Even with the stock hand mic you will find you need to turn down the mic gain a bit. As far as a noise canceling mic, Well it depends on how noisey your surroundings are but then again you will probably be better off talking a little closer to the mic and turning the gain down some. The non amplified D-104's sound nice as well as the 10 da's.

Yes, yes and yes to what Mike said, I think the 10-D sounds the best, BUT you will have to reduce the mic gain on the radio to run it. He is also correct that the standard hand mic will also do a fine job as well with a little higher mic setting. Try that first, you might be surprised. A Cobra CA-50 hand power mic will work well with that radio as well. The thing to remember about the 101 series of radios while using AM Mode is to never run more than about 25/30 watts of carrier, and let the radio work for you, it will sound better and live a lot longer if you stay down at these levels, contrary to popular myth, the 101`s never were meant to put out 100 watts on AM mode, this is a sure way to cook the PA(transformer, final tubes etc) section in the radio in short order. 100 watts or so on SSB is fine, but NOT AM.

Treat a 101 right and it will give you many hours of enjoyment, they are truly great old radios.

Here is a good web site with very good info on the 101 series of radios.

I also would recommend that you have a good service manual,

KS4B has put together a very good one, he has them for sale all the time on E-Bay, just do a search for FT 101 service manual and it should pop up.

Enjoy!

Agreed with everything that was stated earlier, you wouldn't believe how many 101 series radios I get in that have the PA section "toasty fried" in one way or another from them jacking up the carrier control. 30 watts carrier, and that's it!! <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon51.gif ALT=":51"> Also, make sure that someone hasn't cranked the bias control all the way up, if you go to USB, and turn the mic all the way down, flip the switch to "IP" it should rest around 60ma idle, and no more. If it exceeds that, you can adjust it yourself back down to 60ma. Also, I would run a GE driver tube, and either Toshiba, GE, or NEC tubes for the finals, in that order when they are properly installed. The ones to stay away from are RCA, and Sylvania.
