Yes, yes and yes to what Mike said, I think the 10-D sounds the best, BUT you will have to reduce the mic gain on the radio to run it. He is also correct that the standard hand mic will also do a fine job as well with a little higher mic setting. Try that first, you might be surprised. A Cobra CA-50 hand power mic will work well with that radio as well. The thing to remember about the 101 series of radios while using AM Mode is to never run more than about 25/30 watts of carrier, and let the radio work for you, it will sound better and live a lot longer if you stay down at these levels, contrary to popular myth, the 101`s never were meant to put out 100 watts on AM mode, this is a sure way to cook the PA(transformer, final tubes etc) section in the radio in short order. 100 watts or so on SSB is fine, but NOT AM.
Treat a 101 right and it will give you many hours of enjoyment, they are truly great old radios.
Here is a good web site with very good info on the 101 series of radios.
NW2M` Yaesu 101 page click here
I also would recommend that you have a good service manual,
KS4B has put together a very good one, he has them for sale all the time on E-Bay, just do a search for FT 101 service manual and it should pop up.
Enjoy!
