Problems with TS 500V

I have a TS 500V that is around 15-20 years old. It still works but the pre-amp seems to be broken. This has happened 2 times in the past. Once about 10 years ago and the latest about 3 years ago. I have not been using it since that time. When your using the unit you have to cut the power off on it to receive at normal ranges. When the unit is on the receive is extremely low. Is there something that I am doing that is causing this or is this normal for this unit? Thanks.

Does the amp receive really low when you put the preamp button in (ie. turned on)? Or does it receive low when the button is out (turned off)?

If it's low receive when the button is in, the preamp transistor is most likely bad. you can find replacements at Radio Trash (err...I mean Radio Shack) for a buck-fifty for 2 of them. They're easy to replace too, just have to watch which way you solder the new one in.

If it's low receive when the button is out (off) that could mean a shorted or grounded switch. Let me know if it's low with the preamp on or off, I can help you more then.

If it's the preamp transistor, I can tell you what you need to buy, and I can show you how to solder it in, provided you have the tools to do so. Would save you a lot of hassle of paying to ship it out and have someone slaughter you with some outrageous price to replace a 79 cent transistor.

if you want to repair it yourself you'll need a schematic, soldering
pencil, a few simple hand tools and a VOM/DVM to get started.

I think the problem is in the keying transistor, little black thing with three legs. Sounds like it hangs up alittle.

Problem fixed. 9C1Driver had the right idea. Had it replaced yesterday. Thanks for the help guys.
