Really worth it

I did it for a friend who had one. He didn't want any holes drilled in it so I ended up repurposing just about every switch on the front panel.
So it sounds like it can be done and the method to the madness is a matter of personal choice. My Cobra 2000 has extra channels with 2 repurposed front switches which I'm not crazy about so I might consider more options. If I was going to invest the time and money in to a radio I would figure it as Runner Til I Blow ! So I guess My opinion would be the only one that matters. Different Strokes for Different Folks. LOL But Thanks for the input.

I always heard the Super base was a pile of Junk, maybe I was misinformed.
You where probably hanging out with guys that worshiped at the alter of the Cobra 2000. To me those are just a Cobra 148 GTL, a freq. counter, cheap power supply and cheap alarm clock at a stupid markup then and now. Not that any of the above is bad just not as good as the GE!

Back when a brand new Uniden Grant XL or Cobra 148GTL cost $149 to $169 if you went used you put together a faux Cobra 2000 with used componets for $200 to $250. If you wanted to really stomp on it you could get a nice Cybernet chasis or GE. Mod wise you would be ahead in every way compared to purchasing a Cobra 2000 and keeping it stock or modifing it.

Go another route you could get a Sears Road Talker Slant Face or Uniden Washington cheap and again add an alarm clock and freq. counter for again all in under $200 easy.

If you are judging based on your eye's or bragging rights you will almost always be a sucker, nuget, mark take your pick.

Now I do agree with you though that a lot of people have more money than brains when it comes to auctions and wanting items they could not have when they wanted them. Typicaly because they either where a poor kid or had a young family. Fast forward now they are retired, have a pension or nest egg, and they have no bills but few years left on this earth! THey want what they want and can now afford to have it at any price!

Guys if the Cobra 138XR has not been butchured their audio chain has a simple compression circuit in it as well. Not on par with the GE but it does have compression very mild. You can get them for far less and those are SSB as well. That is what Mike of Mikes Radio Repair told me at least a long time ago. Those can also be easily modified for more channels.
