hey guys,

I am looking at getting the ICOM 92AD & a COMET SMA-24 (17") antenna for when I am dirt biking.

I was wondering if it is even useful (is their going to be reception / am I going to be able to get a hold of someone in an emergency) while I am dirt biking in the mountains of northern CA?

thanks

I would think that unless you're down in quite a 'hole'/valley you should be able to hit a repeater somewhere. But the only way to know for sure is to try it and see. Doesn't matter which make/model you have, there will be times when you just will not be able to contact anyone. That's about as normal as you can get. Nothing is 'fool proof'.

The Comet SMA-24 is the very best HT antenna that I have ever used. But they BREAK VERY, VERY EASY. They snap at the base of the whip. And on a dirt bike I'm certain that it will snap off. There are stronger antennas that won't break like the SMA-24. And HT's never have alot of range like a Mobile. So it may or may not work for you.

Maybe something like the Yaesu FTM-10R might work better. More power, more antenna. Depending on terrain it may get out better than the ht.
