Reclaim LSB 16

You were coming in really strong and steady there just a few minutes ago just under 7 at your weakest and hitting 9 on your strongest. My noise levels are coming in steady in the 1-2 range, so there was no problem at all pulling you in.

I just got the "Workman 6 Hub" pseudo-Starduster up yesterday, so I'm curious to see how it performs. When I replaced the stainless steel 102" whip for a fiberglass one for the vertical radiator SWRs dropped right into range and resonance across from 26.965 to 27.405 was excellent.

I'm hoping for many more contacts with this set up at this QTH.

I'm sporting about 6 to 7 units of noise over here today and all kinds of those squiggly weird strange space like noises roaming up and down the channel. In between the noises I could hear you perfectly, but those squiggly noises and a.m. people would come in and cover you up. That's pretty much the nature of the Beast where I'm sitting. I never have below a four or five for noise.

I heard 659 in Northern Indiana, but he didn't hear me.

My noise floor is running 2-3 S units. I could hear another station just barely coming in right at the noise floor, but I couldn't hear him well enough make out numbers or location.

There is some skip propagation, but it is definitely not the best.

Some of you will recall the pre-40 channel days. Back then, the unofficial SSB hailing frequency was LSB 16. LSB 38 has taken over since pretty much the day we went to 40 channels, but it gets too crowded. And it isn't too uncommon to have someone on LSB 38 running so much power that they distort and splash across several channels. Another problem is the occasional idiot - like the one on there right now playing an air raid siren.

With skip propagation apparently improving, I say we try to bring back LSB 16. At the very least, it will provide a relief valve for LSB 38. At best, we may get a less crowded alternative for making DX contacts. I propose we try to get the ball rolling by aiming to make contact on the following schedule:

Saturday, June 5th
12:00 noon eastern/11:00 A.M. central/9:00A.M. pacific

3:00P.M. eastern/2:00P.M. central/noon pacific

6:00P.M. eastern/5:00P.M. central/3:00P.M. pacific

9:00P.M. eastern/8:00P.M. central/6:00P.M. pacific

Sunday, June 6th
12:00 noon eastern/11:00 A.M. central/9:00A.M. pacific

3:00P.M. eastern/2:00P.M. central/noon pacific

If it hadn't been for the bleedover from AM I'm pretty sure I would have heard you. I'll try again later and see if conditions improve.

Rick, I have one of them also. I am using 4 12m hamsticks. The radiator has been modified by taking the winding off and replacing it with an almost resonant length of heavy gauge wire. The radials are shortened by tuning the whips. I have a shunt coil across the input for DC ground.

I just managed to QSO with 226 in San Angelo, TX - about a 1300 trip as the crow flies. I did the first half of the conversation with the "6 Hub" Starduster and the 2nd half on a simple 1/4 wave "Marconi" ground plane I rigged using a stainless steel 102" Radio Shack whip for the vertical radiator. The pseudo-Starduster seems to get out a little better and also pick up more noise.

How does yours work for you?
