My nephews girlfriend brought over this Lafayette HB-640 AM radio. Mfg. date Oct. 1976.

It dead keyed around 3 and swung 4 watts on the dial. Talk about a legal radio!

Looked up tuning points for it and found RV-2 as the Modulation pot. and bam! great modulation and swung to 8 watts+.

Im leaving it @ that. Nice stock and clean sounding radio. Might run it in front of my Pride 150 2x2290 amp. Gonna wire up a homemade 4 pin to 5 pin din adaptor to run my 575M6 and see how it sounds.

Iʻll get some pix on by tomorrow.

Anyone ran this Le Pew before? Any comments or mods welcome!!! Aloha 1-5......

Laff-a-lot made some good radios back in the day- the SSB 100 and SSB 140 come to mind- but were never as popular or sold as much as other brands of their era. Why? IMO it had less to do with electronic performance and more to do with aesthetics. With the exception of a few rigs such as the previously mentioned SSB 100 and 140, most Laffys were considerably aesthetically challenged. In other words a lot of them were butt ugly and no one wanted to look at them no matter how well they may have worked.

Still, you got a nice find. As I recall those radios sounded really good with an old-school Turner mic on them.

I turned up the Mod pot got a nice swing of 8+ watts. Will try to wire up a 4 pin adapter to plug in my 575 mic and my other power mics. Thanx for the reply, yes, they are ugly.. .

Can't wait to see the pics, James. No worries on the looks, either. Even though the Pacer was considered ugly, Wayne and Garth made them cool. Well, kinda. You can put some Hawaiian cool to the Lafayettes!
