2 cents time. Id strip some insulation from thin wire and use the insulation inside the coil form then put the slug back in.

30AWG silicone insulation might work (AliExpress is the best bang), I've shattered Amidon slugs otherwise while winding I.F. coils.
The gonch elastic idea is a keeper!

These have the hollow square adjuster hole, when I melted that wax it probably blobbed up underneath. Then while attempting to cycle the slug through its full range I broke it... It'll be a while till I can get back to it, I replaced that can with one from another road talker and I did have adjustable voltage there with the old TR701 and extra cap a the base, so I'm not touching that again until I know I got this other half squared away...lol
My main issue is getting the circuit board out of the can so I can access the traces on the bottom, when I installed the new TR701, I "temporarily" put it on the old legs of the other transistor.
