If i use a 4ohm spkr on an 8ohm radio will the audio chips see a high swr or should i use two 4ohm spkrs in series

excellent question !!
i look forward to the replies so i can know the answer myself :D

For all intensive purposes you will be fine with the 4ohm. If you run two 4ohm in series your radio will 'see' a 2ohm load. If you intend to keep the volume above 50% most of the time you might want to use an 8ohm.

two 4 ohm loads in series = a 8 ohm load , not a 2 ohm load .
two 4 ohm loads in parallel = a 2 ohm load .

i'd still like to know if the audio chips see a high swr ???????

What is SWR? Is audio AC or DC? Is that 4 ohms or 8 ohms 'DC' resistance or 'AC' impedance? Will a high SWR terrify an audio chip, or cause super damage? If you connect a 4 ohm speaker to an 8 ohm audio output, is it really an SWR of 2:1?

i'm sure the audio ic will tolerate an impedance mismatch of a couple of ohms, but if your really worried about it add a 4 ohm resistor in series with the speaker, but it isn't necessary.

amplifiers be they rf or af are designed to tolerate a certain degre of mismatch and still operate with decent performance.

your cb/hf set works ok into a 2:1 mismatch. does it not?

SWR is the ratio of minimum to maximum voltage or current on a transmission line. Nothing more nothing less.

This can be measured fairly easily at audio frequencies as the measurement device will not influence the circuit.

I converted two cabinets into one with two spkrs in series and mounted two old car spkrs in the empty one in series also. Works ok but one spkr is louder than the other on each cabinet.
