I am thinking of purchasing a Stryker 497. Does this radio REALLY need a peak and tune? With the price tag at 319 I don't want to spend another 30 or 40 dollars if the radio doesn't need it.

Straight out of the box it is a 10m Export and will not even talk on 11m. To function on 11m ALL export radio's need to be converted. In some cases it's as simple as a jumper move, today many radio's now need some things soldered and changed around for the conversion process. This was due to FCC pressure that these radio's were too easy to convert.

My thoughts are since the radio needs to be converted why not buy it from a shop that does good tech work. This way they can give the radio a complete check to make sure it is properly tuned, aligned, and converted.

It's your money and your call. You only sound as good as the tech is that tuned your radio. As an example you can "save 30 bucks" and buy from Crapper Electronics, convert it yourself, and sound ok or average. You could also buy one from DTB radio, have him do everything right, and then people will actually be impressed with your audio when you are on the air.

Here is some information on the Stryker 497.

If you want to use a underperforming $319 radio on 10 meters, by all means purchase the radio without having it converted and tuned.
