I wouldnt think so.....As long as you stay under the max input limit it should be fine...if that kicker is able to put out 1600 or so watts under full input,why not drive it a bit easier and push it to about say 1000 to 1200 output? Might live a bit longer ( 1000 watts is plenty of power to get ya any contacts ) ...just a thought
No, you will not hurt it. In fact, you will actually help the longevity of the amplifier by not running it to the max. Its been my observation that the sweet sixteen reaches 1200 with 60 watts drive. After that, the amplifier really begins to heat up and you start to see diminishing returns with more and more power input.
If your radio is tuned properly and producing 35 watts output, you should see 700-800 watts out of the amp.

Yeah...running less drive into an 8 pill will overwork the finals. Almost like asking if it is worse to run an engine at 3000 rpm rather than continuosly bouncing off the rev limiter.

A well tuned dual final radio will drive it just fine, make sure you have the fan kit( I do not think the fan kit should be a option, it should come with the amp) and it will live a lot longer.
The model number of these amps is not what the output is.

The Mod V is the driver specified for the sweet 16 by texas star and together they might bump 1000-1200 watts on peak. Dual final radio into the sweet 16 might bump 600 watts.
Drive a 2x2290 amp into the 1600 and it'll smoke like a cheap cigar.
You gotta have a fan kit on that thing.
Rich, This exactly true of the sweet sixteen the best part about running it lightly on the input it not only babys the amplifier but clean in is clean out so the best part is your not splattering.
even at 35-40 in hes still going to see 700-800 PEP out if yo cant make a contact and be heard with that wattage you better get an antenna real quick
that's not even the best part of the replies....the alleged output disagreements we see is just as interesting. output wattage is totally irrelevant. the most important factors are:
what transistors does the amp use
what transistors does anything before it use
what is the real world efficiency of the antenna/antenna system
and most of all-what wattmeter????
ameritron was pretty close in one of their ads....'xxx amp is only 1 S-unit below the legal limit'. THAT is what you should be concerning yourself with.
concerning yourself with a number may drive you nuts. for kicks, say you're replacing a dx500-as long as your dx1600 shows even a SLIGHT increase in signal strength over the 500...that's what you want. in theory, that's all you should get. 1600 watts vs 800 or 500 or s3 signal vs s9....all irrelevant.

my ic706mk2g generally runs 'barefoot', with the power setting on 'H', whatever the hell that may be. if that ain't enough, i back it down, to 2 or 3, sometimes 4, then click the dx1600 on. whats my output? beats the sh*t outta me. i can usually get out though...on 27.025. on 28.450, it's almost TOO easy, so i guess the wattage is....ENUFFTAGETOUT.
in case anybody asks why i would back the 706 down....i only have #6 wire in the xj
so you need to concern yourself with lotsa other things, not how many watts. with the end result being....am i running what i need to run to do what i gotta do. by the way, my 706 dialed down to '3', shows anywhere from 225 watts to almost 600, depending on which of 3 wattmeters may be in the jeep. all i know is, i can sometimes talk on the bowl & ALWAYS talk on 10m.
oh yea, as for not driving it to the max....my dx1600 was purchased around 1985, maybe earlier. i have driven it with everything from a stock grant xl to a 2x2879, with quite a bit of time being driven by a dual final export, and it runs just fine after over 27 years of abuse.
Since your under the 100 watt input peak it can handle YOUR JUST FINE. As stated, you should see 700-800 nice easy watts. Amp will run cool and last for decades.
I run a galaxy 66v I have it set at 1.5 dk and swing about 20 on my meter. Just to see what I would get out of the 1600 I hit it with just radio and I was getting 800 out of it. I may look for a dual final radio or just run it the way I got it set up now. I can talk anywhere I want to the way I have it set up. Thanks for all the info.
