Would the 6khz AM filter make enough diference in short wave listening to justify the $ spent? THANKS!!!

I would spend the money. You're looking at about 15kHz vs. 6kHz. Without it you'll be hearing several stations at once which can be quite a pain. I went without the AM filter in my 920 for about a month and couldn't take it any more. As a good example, I tried listening to the chicken band and was hearing about 4 channels at once. Now when I listen it's just 1 channel. So personally I'd say it's worth it. Heck I even got the CW filter even though I don't do any CW operating. I did get a deal on it from a friend, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it.

Well I managed to get a 840 with the am filter already in it. Havent tried it without it but the way it works now is great. I have noticed some really strong signals not far from weaker ones and can see where this may be a problem without the filter. Oh and by the way...The I-Max 2000 works great for recieving from one end to the other.

I just bought a FT-840 new in the box 2005 model. Anything I should know other than that hot resistor that I already replaced? I understand the radio does max 25Watts AM which I could care less about but on SSB most frequencies it will do 100 on a whistle but seems to only talk 50 to 60, any suggestions would be appreciated

The only suggestion I have is to check it with a REAL peak reading meter. If it does not need electrical power to operate it is NOT a REAL peak meter. A typical 100 watt TX on SSB will only read 40-70 watts on an average reading meter.

Actually it has PEP and AVERAGE since there is no such thing as RMS power but I get what you mean. I have a cross needle Daiwa as well. two of them actually. Have you checked the menu settings and made sure it is set to 100 watts? Also make sure the ALC has not been adjusted too high as it will cut power back.

To check and make sure there is not something wrong with the finals you can switch to CW or FM mode and see if you get 100 watts of carrier. If not then there may be something wrong with the finals however I doubt that is the case.

Yes there is a switch inside and it's set to 100. I was hoping to use it without an amp guess I'll just turn the power down to be easy on the radio and use an small amp.

I know my icom has a peak hold option, maybe one in your menu settings. Not familiar with that radio so I could be wrongs.
