I had one a liked it alot. I sold it and got a texas ranger 696f base version and like it too.

I had one with a viagra board installed. It did tend to drift alittle on SSB. Drove me nuts so I sold it.

I like mine alot. Mine was tuned by DTB. I let it heat up for about five min. if I plan to talk a lot on SSB. It has a very quiet receive.

I did not have any drift on either of mine after a little warmup like secret squirrl said.

lots of things that you can do to that chassis. great of you like to mess with them. i don't like the ugly faceplate on them and i don't like the fact that the galaxy only has a 5 digit frequency counter. the older silver faced model's looked a lot better.

with out a doubt the 696fd-1 is a great radio. great performer on SSB and a pretty good talker on AM. i like it a whole lot better then my cobra 148F. love the 6 digit freq counter it's great to be able to unlock the clarifier to freeband into freqs like 27.5700 usb for that int. dx. i used my tone and dim buttons for my extra channels and the ch 9 button for a 10kc slide. i use it for a back up to my 2950's and ione on my base to play a round with there such good little radios for such a great price i had to get two.
