I have a Texas Star 350 HDV that was the best addition to my equipment since my Cobra 148. But anyway down to business, the RX relay got stuck and was keyed up full time. I bought a new relay from Mouser and installed it. Put the amp in line and turned it on. Immediatly I saw smoke from the back of the box. Good thing I left the cover off cause I saw it was the RF choke. I was told by a tech that the choke didn't really need to be in there anyway, but don't know for sure as it was there in the first place. But the question is do I need to replace the choke? And also what could have made it burn up?

Come on guys now its almost 100 views and still no helpful advice. You can leave the wise cracks behind and please give something good.

wise cracks aside what he said was true .the part is there for a reason and yes you need it or texas star wouldnt have it there .if the choke smoked after the addition of the new relay i,d suspect that the relay might have went in wrong??
befor ever changing the relay did you try different length jumpers?? between amp and radio?this usually helps with hanging relays and stuff and its the first thing ya try when having relay key and unkey issues.
its too bad its too late to try now.replace that choke and any other burnt parts and try again is the only advice i can give now .but i,m thinking the choke may smoke again .it happened for a reason and until you find out why ,it will keep happening.
good luck..tell santa you want a new amp now.
