I’m just curious, now that I’m learning more and more about antennas, just how effective would the bandit’s antenna set up have been? For those that don’t know or remember, that trans am had what appears to be an nmo antenna mounted between the t-tops. That doesn’t seem like it would provide enough ground plane to work properly. Any thoughts?

the antenna on bandits trans am isnt a nmo mount it is a antenna specialist pop in mount,,,if i remember right it was a 3/8 inch hole,,,, it was the grey version of the m 124 antenna made by antenna specialist,,, and yes it would work but just like any roof mounted 4 watt antenna,,,

Smokey and the Bandit Antenna
Smokey's antenna may well be the Antenna Specialist AS MR 276 which looks like this one from the original movie:

The Antenna Specialist AS MR 276 seems a close match to Bandit's antenna. It's the right shape, color and length. The antenna doesn't have to be installed on the trunk. The included lip mount can be removed, so the antenna can be installed on the car roof giving it the same profile as the Bandit's.

(just something I ran across back when this came up once before...)

Or as my as owners paper says the big maggie.used 1 for years n its still going strong
