TRC-485 mostly dead, sometimes it works?

I got a TRC-485 from an old timer about a month ago. The radio lights up just fine. Goes through all channels, switches between am/usb/lsb just fine. It has no TX or no RX.....most of the time. I know it's strange. Sometimes you turn it on and it works for 2 minutes, sometimes not at all, and sometimes for 15 minutes. I did take it to a local repair guy and they said they couldn't repair it.
So, that leaves me with a few questions:

Is this radio the same as a Magnum 257/Albrect 485/Dragon trc485? similar?
Does anyone here know what to search for?
Who would you trust to send this off to for repairs?

Check for dry solder joints on the circuit board/s, cheaper unidens are plagued with them as they get older.
