These are both listed as Trunk lid mounts. One is just a metal clamp (which I prefer the other has a plastic housing over it. Does anyone if its the same underneath and if i can remove cover

I wouldn't remove the outer covering. It isn't needed for the antenna to function, but it does provide weather shielding which keep the antenna working. Both actually have this weather shielding, its just done differently. If water gets inside there it can get in the coax or worse...
Essentially they are the same thing, just different designs, thats all.

Both are metal just the one has a plastic shell covering the mount. The "plastic" one has more mounting surface area and will probably hold more securely. What type of connector is on the antenna?NMO? PL259? 3/8x24?
