I have a Uniden Grant XL I purchased new in 2002. The capacitors have been replaced (not be me) about two months ago and I'd like to place this radio in service for talking skip. Can the dead-key be reduced from 3.5 watts down to one or two watts? If it something I can do that would be great because I don't want to ship it out again and take the risk of it being damaged during shipping.

This is the variable resistor for the dead key. In yellow are two resistors, I swap their locations and that will allow you to drop the dead key much lower than otherwise possible.

Modify 148 or Grant XL for lower dead key.jpg

Oh boy! Thanks for the valuable information but the swap-over must require de-soldering and re-soldering and I'm not going there. I have no choice but to continue to leave the radio as-is. Thanks again!

It would. You can still lower the dead key as much as possible, but each radio is a little different so I can't tell you where it would end up.

Recon, he's just letting you know in case you need the deadkey lower than VR10 will set it.
you should have no problem getting it down to 1.5-2 watts using only the variable resistor.

Thank you, but I just don't feel good about tampering with this XL. I have a stock "Plain-Jane" Cobra 29 LTD Classic. Can the dead-key be reduced without major surgery?

well not to be the bearer of bad news, but the 29LTD will require some soldering and components in order to lower the deadkey.

if you need to have some work done on either of these and you don't feel comfortable doing it, PM me and i can help you.
