NEWINGTON, CT, Mar 22, 2002--The ARRL has asked the FCC to eliminate the 80, 40 and 15-meter Novice/Technician Plus CW subbands as such and reuse that spectrum in part to expand the phone allocations on 80 and 40 meters.

"ARRL suggests that it is urgent that the Commission consider revisions to operating privileges in the Amateur Service," the League said in its Petition. "The opportunity to eliminate the Novice and Technician-Plus telegraphy subbands and the reapportionment of those inefficiently deployed segments will allow alleviation of significant, sometimes critical, overcrowding in the popular Amateur HF allocations." <hr /> Hmmmm <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">

i couldn't agree more Doc ! i'm w/ya on this one. after all,the

hobby is dying off somewhat.why not do it that way to promote new ham-ops?? IMO it could only "help" the current

situation as it stands.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)"> Slim CDX285

This is from the arrl west gulf division. I think that this is good news as far as the ARRL stance on code.

UPDATE ON RETAINING THE MORSE CODE

The current policy of the ARRL is to support the retention of the

International Morse Code as a testing requirement. Having said that, at

the July board meeting it was decided that the directors would survey

their members to see what their opinions are now. Having already done

that, I thought I would share the results with you. I have received

well over 400 responses to the question of what the ARRL's position

should be. At this point in time I have 210 that favor keeping the code

and 192 that favor eliminating it. I have read each and every one of

them and some were quite long. There was a great deal of logical

thinking in some of the replies and others were filled with emotion. I

understand that this is a difficult issue. However, I have decided to

go with the majority and at this point, I will have to cast my vote on

the side of those in favor of keeping the Morse as a test requirement in

some form.

That's it for now. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Summerfest in

Austin.
