What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

The GE Super Base is an awesome cb radio. It's GE's answer to the Cobra 2000.
I re-hooked my GE Super Base back up to my Star duster today and it was sounding superb again. When I first got it I hooked it to my KL-300P and Saskatchewan was telling me I was Blowing their doors in and that made me feel good from PA.

Yes no trouble yet but with all old radios it is only a matter of time. That's why I have some new stuff also because a good radio repair shop isn't just around the corner. Good luck with your project.

My superbase is dead. Nothing but static, no tx, no rx. I havent started on itbyet but did do some research over at grumpy's. I readcthat the superbase was notorious for leaking caps and the goo eating runs on the board. I did notice a crystal with 3 leads. Never seen one before. Does anyone have a service manual or decent schematic so that I can start the project? Thanks

The most common fault with that radio, is cold solder joints. The sandwiched boards, make it a major PITA to work on. I have a mobile version here, that I own with this issue a very long time. I am obviously, not looking forward to the repair.

I got into it this morning. Looks like someone changed the big cap and cleaned up that part of the board. I do see other leaky caps. Will change them out shortly. I also see a few tantalums that like to short out and take parts with them. I didnt know that they hadca mobile version ofvthis model. That could be useful. I have maybe half a dozen different GE radios here and not one of them works. I am very much a tech that holds in high esteem radios that were built for easy technician work. There are nothing but solid strand 18 or 20 gage solid wires in this that are extremely brittle. Im seriously going to have to circuit trace this after replacing every cap including the tants.

Had Cybernet not made it difficult to work on that radio, I wouldn't be bitching about it. I have a high regard for the radios they made. Not everyone agrees with me, but it's my opinion. The mobile version is the 3-5825B.

So far, I did some quick tests, and some detailed visual. The runs where the big cap was that got smooged tested all fine end to end. Tantalums tested no shorts. Finals seem odd. Need to lift 2 sides in order to properly test them. This is going to be a detailed circuit trace job. Hope its something easy like the pll gone bad or a crystal i got lots of those. Have not found any broken wires. C239 was removed. Wonder why...

VCO's are also a problem in these radios.

From what I hear, most people who absolutely love these radios are not technicians and never had to go inside. There are exceptions to this obviously.
