Why Do YOU Use an Amplifier?

gain linearity is an issue , AM...

Yes it is. Thats one reason I moved to the 8877. Adaptive predistortion aka puresignal makes it all better. Linearity is an issue on ssb too but not as obvious to the operator.

1) doesn't have tp be
2) read up on buck/boost and choke vs cap input
3) 2 x 120 > 240 step up transformers. 220 in the 120 side rectified and doubled.*

*eye to KVA rating and no way to know if the insulation will hold up until you try.

I don't like using doubler circuits. I like a modern ccs rated transformer with a cap input filter. Old iron can save you some money but I hear voltage regulation can be poor unless you use a choke input filter. When you need a over an amp at 4000vdc it starts to get expensive.

I have a 3kv 1.47kva antique from American Transformer Company. IIRC it was made in the 30s or 40s. I haven't put a load on it yet but it makes 4200 volts with a cap input filter and didn't short out. I'll use it with the gs35b tubes. I don't want to lose the more expensive tubes if things go south.
