Most HF radios were designed to be SSB rigs, AM is not one of their strong suits. I don't know what you expect out of an AM rig. Your friends Kenwood would do much better if the AM filter was installed, that would help a whole bunch. How to help a FT 1000 I am not sure. You can experiment with the radio and probably get it to sound OK, but it won't deadkey 5 and swing 50 if that is what you are looking for.

Hope this helps

My Kenwood TS450 does real well on AM.

Danny, AK214 here in Indy has a TS850 that does well on AM.

We don't run on AM here locally, but once in while when you get bored you try it. The muffled sound on the HF rigs most of the time come from trying to see swing. You set the power, carrier and mic to where you see just a tad bit of forward movement. I.E... I set mine to key at 50 and it swings to 60. Doesn't sound like much but it sounds good on the receive side. I've had my wife play with it while I was in the mobile using my Lincoln and it was pretty strong and clear. I can set mine this way up to 100w and still see forward movement, but after that it's no movement or backward movement and it sounds muffled and nasty sounding. This works well with amps too. I've use it with my QRO and Ameritron 811H. My QRO would key 500w swing 1500w and the local am'ers were amazed. Never told them what I was using. I don't do AM, I was just playing.

BTW... I don't have an AM filter in mine. My radio was tuned by a local here that does well with HF rigs. My 450 does 150w on SSB and AM.

Jerry,

Great to see you on here now and then. I need you to ask your tech about a squelch mod for my 140. Hope to catch you on the radio when the conditions come in between CO and IN. Catch you later my friend.

Hello Ed, it's nice to see your posts as well. I've been trying to catch you on the airwaves, but I guess the conditions just haven't been here for Co. yet. I've been hearing Or and Wash quite a bit. I've been working a ton of hours so I don't do the computer too much.

Talk to you later my friend.

Hope the family's doing well.

Has anyone tried to use a modified Yaesu FT-1000MP on 11 meters on the AM band. How good will it transmit and recieve. Does anyone have any opinion on the HF Rig. I was thinking of buying one.

Well I would double check you followed EVERY STEP EXACTLY on the mod,,,,its eaasy to ASSume you know the next step and not READ the detail,,,every step counts!!

As for AM on these HF rigs,,,go to 75 meter at night after 7 pm and tune around 3.850 to 4.000 Mhz you will hear alot of people on LSB but you will also find some guys on AM they will blow you away with the quality,,,in fact some of them are on the exact radio you have.

There is a Collins net on AM:

1st Wednesday AM Net on 3.880 at 8PM in each time zone moving from east to west.

10 Meter AM net Sunday on 29.050 at 12 Noon central

So is AM made for these HF rigs just a "ADD ON"?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! get on the air and listen to these nets, you will be impressed. They arent going to have that tinny echo roger beep sound of a "GOOD" Cobra <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> but they will have QUALITY sound that AM should have. Open your mind and give them a try.

"THIS AINT YOUR DADDY'S COBRA 29"

No offense meant to anyone
