Well I was partial to the 706MKIIG but now the 897D has everything the Icom has and a blue display to boot. The new 897D comes with a TXCO which keeps you on frequency which I know the 706 lacks in VHF/UHF and the TXCO is an option for the 706 but the 706 comes with a remote kit which I never used and still have here

I think If i were to buy another mobile I would try the 897D

No mod needed for 60 meter by the way on the 897D <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon51.gif ALT=":51">

The antron 99 does "fair" for recieve on other bands. You really notice a huge difference once your below 17 meter, you can hear the signals but they are extremely attenuated. How hig up is your 99? you could always run a piece of coax to the base of where the antenna mounts and connect the center of the coax to one wire and the shield to another wire and run each as long as possible back toward the ground in whats call an "inverted "V" .

sorta like this dorky smiley >>>>> <img src=http://home.comcast.net/~shockwav/food_477.gif ALT=":crncndy">

since it will be for RX only you wont have to worry about SWR

as for AM that might be an issue if using the 897 on 11 meter AM other than that the only time I have used AM was on 75 meter and that was only a few times

Get a Kenwood TS-2000 <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon51.gif ALT=":51"> pricey but has it all

the inverted V should be as far apart as you can,,,,,, example I have one wire attached by a string on a tree in the backyard and the other wire attached to the a string going to front of my house and your apex of 35 foot is perfect. dont let the wire hit and electrical wires or any metal the longer the better.

Have fun

As the picture above with the copper colored lines show the shield is connected to a copper wire on the left and the center is connected to the other copper wire on the right just ignore the insulators on the top because you wont need them for listening,,,,,, all your doing is using your coax so its easy to connect to your radio solder the shield to the wire to the left and tape it up so water does not go into the coax then solder your center to the other wire and black tape it up then just hang up the center up as high as you can just dont let the shield or center or any of the wires touch metal. All your doing with the 2 wires you just soldered is making sorta like a indian teepee

That Help?

I have the 706, and I got to take a look at 897 in fairly good detail the other day. The 897 is neat with the A/C power supply option that snaps into the bottom (or battery pack) and tuner on the side. It truly is a grab and go radio. I could see myself taking that camping with me. It sure has a lot of features, and the TXCO that it comes with is nice.

The 706 however, is a much smaller unit but the screen is much larger. The separation kit is great if you ever plan on mobile use. I think Yaesu fell down on the User Interface on that 897. The screen is really small and the menu structure sure could use work. Feature-wise they both appear to be similar except that Yaesu comes with the TXCO, and it's an option on the 706. If you plan on primarily HF work and FM on 2m/440, you may not really need that. My advice is that if you ever think you want to go mobile, get the 706. If it's purely to be used as a base, then download the manual for each and study it a bit to see which one looks like the easiest for you to use.
