Yaesu VX-8r - Cross band repeat?

I have looked through the forums on this board and have not found this information: can the VX 8R be configured for cross-band repeat? I loved this feature on the old ICOM W32A.

Yaesu FT 60R will cross band receive and transmit but not as a repeater.

Yeh ok, the reason I ask and this might seem stupid, is I would like to teather a balloon with a ht capable of crossband repeat strapped to it for the purpose of using low power to reach out further. I figure it would be worth trying anyway. As most of my radio use is portable, I could use my ft897 to tx/rx to and from the ht.
I dont know, just an idea.
