I have had issues with SWR and proximity to metal objects. Many years ago, I put an AR10 Ringo Ranger onto a mast that was side-mounted on a 9 foot iron roof vent pipe 9 (apartment building). The only thing that lowered the SWR was getting all of the antenna above the top of the pipe. I...

Thanks for the detailed replies. I am inclined to try the 102" for starters. Longhorn mentioned issues with sway. Does the 102" ever actually hit the cab? How does it do at highway speeds?
Thanks again,
JD
Thanks, dudes. Yah, I'd use a rear stake hole, but there's always been something about that aesthetically that I don't like. The predator coil is probably a little too conspicuous, but then again 102" is pretty bodacious. I just got a Magnum 257 and I'm itching to get on the air.

Hi,
I'm looking at putting a stakehole mount in my F150 (Breedlove EZN) and I'd prefer to use the stakehole in the front of the bed by the cab. I'm concerned that SWR will be a problem because of the proximity of the cab. I'm considering one of the following:
1) 7' Firestik
2) 120" whip...
Reliability and cost are not correlated precisely. Have you ever used a satphone? They are very positionally finicky and susceptible to call-drop.
Amateur VHF/UHF gear is cheaper than export gear, especially when factoring-in the cost of base antennas. I argue that with the majority of...
It's a tricky one, because a $60 difference on a $300 is very significant. If it was half, I'd say WTF. Too bad sparky gets a bad rap, because his prices are excellent. Same with copper. I guess you get what you pay for.
I emailed with him, and his price was the same as Walcott's. But, I'd have to spend Ohio sales tax and gas to get there and back, adding a total of about $60 to my final price. I really want a 2950dx that hasn't been tortured by a tech who doesn't care what he's doing.
Robb,
Just playing devil's advocate:
Is using a non type-accepted radio and running >4 W am power a RIGHT?
If it's against federal law, 10 out of 10 judges would say that it's not a right.
I'm just sayin'........
Yes, gamegetter, I saw that. It says "I don't think I want to..". Perhaps he was mistakenly under the impression that the the test is difficult or expensive.
Alternatively, maybe he is a tax-evader or a felon. Those would be other reasons to not try and get licensed.
