Hams on CB

Wayne,Jim can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Jim was refering to hams using their HF rigs and amps on 11m instead of legal CB gear. That is what has him bent out of shape.

No doubt. Never the less. There is obviously a lot of ham HF equipment being used on 11m by non-Hams. Brings to mind the Pot calling the Kettle black argument, If that be the case.

I think a sometimes what happens is some Hams want to talk about the illegal activity of CBer's and fail to follow the rules outside of their license. This activity doesn't sit well if they are those type of hams . I haven't encountered those types outside of the internet like QRZ . And believe me I have made some mistakes like accidentally using my SSB call on 75 meters. But no one jumped me over it. I think the internet doesn't paint a good picture in general . I know a few locally that I met on the freeband years ago that were hams then but now are legal begals . I've heard them argue with each other about being legal but I sit there and remember while they were hams they still talked freeband. That doesn't matter to me but I just find it funny that they are so legal about others but didn't use the same standard with themselves . That's ok I just do what I need to do and mind my own business unless someone with that mentality addresses me or starts jumping on someone I'm talking to . I always felt a good spirit and friendliness crosses a lot more gulfs than tearing down the bridge .

Nothing like a double standard

Peddler,
I think we sort of have the same feelings about some things (scary thought, huh?). And I also agree with the others who have expressed a different view point here. How can you do both of those things? Beats me, but I do. Having a particular 'attitude', 'CB'er', or 'hamster' kind of thing, is fine if it's done in the 'right' way and place. If it's not in the 'right' place, or done at the 'right' time, then both/either are inappropriate and the person with that attitude is 'out of place', an embarrassment, or just wrong (a typical 'ham'/'CB'er', depending on your view point), and you/I probably wish they'd just go away. Anything wrong with having that attitude about "those" kind'a people? Not really, I figure it's about as normal as you can get. What is bad about it is getting stuck in the same old 'rut' all the time. It turns into one'a them "P'ing" contests, a personal 'challenge' kind'a thingy, maintaining a 'reputation'. Anyone remember the 'Dog' on the ham bands? A perfect example, sort of. Had a 'reputation', you just knew it was going to be out in left field, or whatever he said was going to be some thing really outrageously 'wrong'. (Which was his whole intent! Get a 'reaction' from whoever was listening.) Nothing particularly 'wrong' with that either, but you have to be careful or it'll bite you (and it did). He was also a very reasonable guy... if you 'caught him just right. Would apologize for something that he may have said if it was a little to 'pointed' to someone personally, seen it happen.
So, keeping in mind that I'm always 'right' and 'proper', you should straighten your act up and conform to MY view of things! ?? See where I'm going with that? 'Vent' when you have too, just don't let it get you down any further than you have too. Otherwise, 'they' just might have 'won' the 'game' 'they' were playing. The only way not to get caught up in that sort of thing is to be 'above' it, so to speak. Huge amount of "depends" in that, just like the commercially sold 'Depends', full of S_ _ _! The 'trick' is in knowing how to deal with them. Do that 'dealing' right and you get points. Do it wrong and you get your fingers covered with what's inside them 'Depends'.
- 'Doc

(All puns intended even if I didn't see them to start with. Lots of fertilizer contained in this post, especially my being so 'right' and 'proper'. It is, and it is not a criticism, mainly just another view point. All other excuses/etc implied or not. May be a hazard to your health if misunderstood. Disregard all not applicable.)

Why do hams resort to going back to cb? I know of at least ten hams who are always on cb running their amps. I thought that using amplifiers on cb was illegal?? Just my thought!!!

If unimportant stuff like this bothers you that much, then I pity you.

1:Why do hams resort to going back to cb?

As far as a licensed operator talking on the cb band goes they have every right to use the 11 meter band the same as anyone else in this country, they're are laws that state this fact.

2:I know of at least ten hams who are always on cb running their amps.I thought that using amplifiers on cb was illegal??

Well it's a well known fact that it is illegal to transmit with more that 4 watt affective radiated power on the 11 meter band and if a licensed amateur operator chooses to use "his" amp on that frequency he is violating FCC rules and regulations and should stop that illegal act or risk being caught and face possible charges or you could do as they do and self police the 11 meter band and report those who you know for a fact are violators of these laws which you have knowledge of or risk becoming a hypocrit just like the licensed operator.

3:Just my thought!!!

Thoughts are the beginning of an action so it's up to you to act or become part of the crime.

The 4 watt rule is for CB transmitter power.
The part 95 has no limit on antenna gain or ERP, only a limit on antenna height.
Also dont forget that 100% modulated AM with 4 watt carrier can have 16 watts PEP.

If you had a legal CB on an 8dB gain antenna, and a 100 watt PEP ham rig on a unity gain antenna, you would not be able to tell the difference.

I agree its OK for hams to use CB with certified CB transceiver. Also, just remember the truckers like to make 28.085MHz their 2nd trucker channel.

Well it's a good thing the FCC does not measure power output at the antenna then most antenna maufacturers claims would be debunked and as for your statement about power out measurements they do not apply here so your time was wasted because the FCC measure power output at the rear of the rig being tested.

But they do have equipment that can closely measure output in field tests.

And truckers use 28.185 as thier 2nd trucker channel because that's where most illegal radios switch to when they change the band switch.

ya know i was thinking about this post last night while going back and forth to NYC in the big truck and i think MY main reason is as i said before ..........it's ALL radio!!!!

HF, VHF, UHF, CB, MURS, AM broadcast band DXing ,shortwave,i dont care if you got it i'll try to work ya on it....hell i'd try to work you on the NEXTEL if you think it will be fun

now carry on and ENJOY radio

Well said.

My thoughts too.

most end up back on 11m because they get bored rigid on ham bands.who wouldn't?

Now, now. Like the entire gist of this thread (which is to denigrate hams and I believe is motivated by jealousy), it's ALL about "point of view"---the perspective of the poster. Remember, this is two-way street and the mirror reflects BOTH ways! For me, the opposite is true: CB is for me an occasional tool used when the road backs up for no reason and I need to find the right lane. Intelligent conversations, to me, are found in discussions of theory, polite conversations about/with family and friends.
Honestly, I mean NO harm, but I simply cannot STAND the silly, immature,
"cutesy" phrases and sayings that CB ops use. Like............."I ain't got no panties on"! Or "Ah jist got down". Or endless and silly repetitive phrases (WHO CARES IF YOU "GET DOWN, OR UP, OR FALL OVER"?) (y)
Instead of meaningless, repetitive phrases over and over and over, why not just say "YES!!!!"

(y) If I had to listen to that for more than 5 minutes, it would drive me crazy!!! It is STILL, after all, a matter of opinion. I NEVER just talk on CB just for the heck of it; it comes on to find out which lane to get in (and can simply listen for awhile for that without saying a word), then it goes OFF. When I find out what I want to know, I'm done!

Boring is relative. I know this might offend a few, but we can't have it ONE way or OUR way alone. It's all about perspective, and the perspective of the two services is different.

Let's quit sniping at each other; it solves nothing.

Personally I think the initial post is FUNNY! And yes, it sounds like a 'sour grape' whimper.

I use a CB here (WY) because the repeaters are too far apart & not elevated enough. We drive daily in areas that are cellular voids!

Effective communications can sometimes mean the difference between life & death especially in a rural WY winter. A person needs all the options available to them.
