home brew coil for a 5/8 cb base antenna

ok , so ive got it in my head to take the maco type tuning loop off my 5/8 and try a coil . i unexpectedly got some 1/4 inch copper tubing from someone last night and while sitting in my chair watching tv i made up a coil . its not finished and i still have some questions . but i think considering i just messed with it while watching tv its got potential if i really pay attention to get the spacing more correct and even .

10 warps on a 1 1/2 inch former with wire was suggest for a coil . this is 10 wraps of 1/4 inch tubing and if got it down to about a 1 5/8 inch inside diameter .... no more than 1 3/4 . if i get these coils evenly spread pretty much 1/4 of an inch apart should this work as well ? im thinking it should ..... mr coily make his ENFORCER with a big external coil and the sirio tornado does too .

well , i was counting down the back , watch my finger as i count them in the video . if you hold it so the lower leg that will go to ground makes it kinda L shaped and turn it so its facing away from you and count down there are 10 full loops . there is a little less than 1/2 a turn back to the L/ground and up to the vertical/hot top . so at most 10 3/4 turns . i think its stiff enough that i could get away with not using a PVC former inside of it . i can't imagine a bird or squirrel bending it , certianly if the wind blew hard enough to bend it the house wouldnt survive . a direct impact from a good sized branch or broken limb flying in the wind could move/bend it though .

homer ...... im dont seem to be able to use your coil calculator since i dont know all the parameters . im not understanding what its asking for on some of the parameters . any suggestions on what i should put in them ?

freq. 27.205
diameter .. of the tubing or what ?
turns .... of what ?
distance ....of/from what ?
X and L ..... huh ? what ?
coax .... 50 ohms

In that case, forget I said anything . . .

Actually, I think the second column may be already filled with recommended parameters. The first is where you put the info in cm (thus, the conversion link). On closer examination of the link I think it may be for making a coil matched directly to 50ohm coax without using a tap. May be useless to you. As I said:

well let me ask this ... since this is not the typical home brew coil i realize that y'all probably cant say it should work fine . but is there any reason it shouldn't ? the coils on the mr coily and sirio base antennas are larger diameters and have less loops/coils .
they do tune differently though . im planning on tapping the coil like mr coily does . should i use a different coil diameter , spacing and loop count since im using larger material than wire ?

My thoughts are two:

1.) Try what you've got and see. It could be just the ticket. . .

2.) Because spacings as they relate to size seem to have meaning where antenna building is concerned, perhaps the reason why broader and shorter coils are used is more than just to look cool, but necessary to get a proper electrical result - ie, more than just a good SWR, but efficiency as well.

PS. these kind of questions can be, and have proven to be, hazardous to the life span of a calm radio forum thread.
