Military-grade ends on 18 feet of coax...

Well, chock up another not-for-me cb shop...was planning on stopping by this place (based on recommendation on this very forum), then he started advertising.

He was telling everyone that it was the length of the cable that would fix all their issues, including squealing, SWR, and basically any other antenna issue. He only sold coax in 18 foot lengths because that was the perfect length and he had been doing cbs for 41 years. He had at least three truck drivers convinced their SWR issues would be majically solved because they didn't have military-grade connectors too...

Hmm, if I hadn't had the family along, and been able to power up for a bit; I probably would have quized him for a while about why it was the perfect length...

Oh well...another one crossed from my list of reportedly "good" cb shops.

He's talking shit,18 foot lengths of coax are impedance inverters at 27 mhz,or more commonly known as 3/4 wave matching stubs.No doubt they do give a better swr reading on a badly matched antenna (will make a 2:1 swr read perfect),but it is still a badly matched antenna.

i don't believe there is such a thing as a military grade pl259,pl259's are non constant impedance plugs.

The only thing "military" about coax connectors is the number assigned to the connector type. Somewhere I saw a crossreference as to what the military refers a PL-259 or any other type of connector. They typically start with UM or something like that. My brain is not working right now or I would look it up.

I was just surprised to hear this "white listed" and highly recommended shop touting such garbage...if they sell this whole coax thing, what are they doing to the insides of radios (since they are obviously out to make a buck).

you'll notice rf parts ain't claiming any of their uhf/pl259 plugs are mil spec.stick to amphenol 83-1sp you wont go far wrong.

Bob's CB Shop off I-80 in PA...I've seen numerous posts about them and they are/were "white listed" at one point?

This was the first time I heard Bob's advertising wares, all previous times (past year or two?) they just announced where they were located and business hours...almost like they might have changed hands?

I also heard good reports about Bob's CB Shop. As a truck driver i have seen a lot of nickel n dime CB shops. My theory is this anyone can turn a screwdriver including me. Finding a darn good CB shop is not an every day experience. I have 1 tech for the last 18 yrs. When he retires then a lot of us in my neck of the woods will be S.O.L.

Bob is a nice guy, but he is no technician. He fired his technician who was actually pretty good afterbhe caught him stealing. So now he is trying to run the place himself without any technical know-how.
