Regency HR-212

greetings, new member and newly licensed ham here.

I have a regency hr212 that I bought several or more years ago at an auction for a few bucks and I am finally getting around to look at it. It came with power supply and I fired it up last night and it appears to be working great, lights turned on and all. I don't have antenna up yet, maybe in a few weeks I will put together the 2 meter ground plane I bought at the last ham fest and be able to check the radio out a little better.

I have downloaded the service manual from N4MW website and am beginning to read and learn about the radio. Now the radio is very clean, much better looking than some of those on N4MW web site, so I get the impression this radio is going to work. And so I am wondering if crystals are still available out there some where? I know it's not a highly sought after radio, but if it works why not use it at home as my base. Thanks for your help. I hope there is someone out there that can Elmer me through this if it is a worth while project.

Try International Crystal Manufacturing Co, OK city OK. Or Jan Crystals in Florida. I think they are still around. May be expensive, tho when you can older synthesized rigs for $40. Consider this, too: Many repeaters now require a tone encode (often 100 HZ) which the HR-212 doesn't have. Nice rig and very innovative in 1973 when I bought one!

I fear by the time you fill it with crystals you will have spent as much as buying a low priced new rig that would at least have tone encode/decode which is necessary for many repeaters.

Looks like this is better left as a nostalgic project. Which I would not mind working on. I will just keep saving money then to buy the kenwood ts2000 I have my sight set on as a base.
