There has been a file out for a while (Moleculo posted it in this thread) on doing an alignment on the VX-8GR. Unfortunately I and others found that the procedure for accessing the menu did not work. I recently found a file on the Yahoo group posted up by IK2BCP that cleared things up for me. There is a password (AH041M) that needs to be entered in the CW ID (Menu 16) and CW ID needs to be activated for the procedure to work. Attached is the file from the Yahoo groups.

In the Phoenix area we have an emerging UHF APRS network on 445.925 with a few mountain top digis covering the central part of the state. Unfortunately I was having a difficult time accessing the UHF APRS with my 8GR. For reference I connected the radio to a 2m 1/4 wave on my roof (resonates decent on 440 but poor radiation pattern) and found that I could only make it into the digis with the radio on 5W. I entered the service menu on the UHF side of the radio and increased deviation, After playing around I think I liked increasing it form the factory setting of 111 to 125.

One thing I found that I did not see in the document is you press the HM/RV button to save and exit the service menu, If you just power cycle it does not save your settings.

Now I can make it into the digis on 2.5W with the same antenna setup.

For some weird reason, a Singapore radio shop has posted the VX-8GR service manual PDF along with other manuals on their download site. Unfortunately they don't have a service manual for the VX-8R or VX-8DR.

73!
