I just ordered a Sparky tuned General Lee with top gun mod to run at home for a base radio. I also ordered a Astron 70 amp supply, I want to run this combo with my TNT 350HD thru my 5/8 maco. The radio is supossed to dead key 2 watts on low.

Just looking for some feedback on this set-up, hope I didn't choose poorly.

Mike.

The Lee has a Hi/Low switch. You'll be wanting to run it on HI seeing as your amp is a high drive type. The Hi position on the Lee should be set at 10 watts when you get it. If it's not doing that or maybe turned up even higher, then reset it to 10 watts. High power adjustment is VR13. If you have to move that one then also check Low Power again. Many times when you move one the other will move some too. Low power is VR16.

The Lee is a good radio as long as you don't need sideband or a frequency counter.

The 70 amp supply is a keeper for the future in the event you want to go to a bigger amp but it is overkill for the moment for that 350.

Good luck

Good choice on the power supply and antenna. The radio...well that all depends on what you consider a "good" setup. A GL from Sparky's (meaning the AMC has been disabled and the lpf is not functioning properly) with the addition of the TG (low key/high swing) is a recipe for a splatter box. Feed that dirty signal to a TNT amp and it just makes matters worse. It may not be so bad if you don't have neighbors close to you (you'll probably only interfere with your own household electronics) but if you have close neighbors don't be surprised when they start complaining about interference. If you have other CBers that operate in your area you'll probably get complaints from them also about "bleeding" onto the adjacent channels of the one you're operating on. Just my opinion...YMMV.

You will get plenty of feedback from your Sparky tuned radio,if the Sparky radio does not have enough feedback for you, add an amplified mic.

Well he is superman afterall!:w00t: LOL

I have a tnt350 hd and get great results with it I mainly use it on sideband with a galaxy 949. On am i dk 5 watts swinging to 12 and it does really good for me.

good luck with it.

Thanks for the FEEDBACK LOL!!;)

I have been running the TNT with a SPARKY tuned SS158edx from my truck hooked up to my base antenna and was getting good reports from the local guys. No bleed over here at the house and no complaints.

This radio is a little more power than the 158, we will see if it is to much drive for the amp creating a splatterbox. Will be nice to have this hooked up to the Astron getting everything moved over to the bench.

I have a stock Cobra 2000 for sideband work.

Yeah my screen name is superman but remember I am only a JUNIOR member!!!;)

i think you did great. you got a good power supply and have
the option to go bigger on the amp and still have plenty of amps
for it.however. for me just for am use id would have got a cobra29bc
alot less money then more money for the 2x4 amp to put behind it
which i think would give ya better overall output.but thats just me
u did good

When i used my High Drive amps whether it is a Texas star or a TnT H.D. amp, I always used a 2wt dead key and get more of a swing out of it. I would never put 10wt dead key into any High Drive amp, And yes i was told they could take it, But i like to have my pills last a lot longer. JMHO.

10 watts input key is ideal for a 4 pill, not for a 2 pill. 2-4 watts key into that amp would be perfect. Splatterbox????? That is anyone's guess but if you run the mic gain wide open sure it could splatter a few channels but no one is going to care about that. As far as TVI, any transistorized amp will cause TVI if overdriven....the General Lee won't overdrive it wattage wise. Most 2 pills can be driven with a one pill amp all day long so you are just fine.

A 10 watt input dead key would be waaaaaay too much. Here is what X-Force says about the TnT350.

TNT 350hd

Transistors 2 x 2SC2879
Dimensions H 4 1/4' x L 7 1/8' x W 41/4'
Amp Draw (maximum) 29
Class B biasing
SSB Delay auto
Pre-amp yes
Driver Required N/A
Power Output (RMS) 150 Watts
Power Output (PEP) 400 Watts
Driven Power (RMS) N/A
Driven Power (PEP) N/A
install recommended with 8ga wire
and 50a fuse. Max input carrier of
5w or 120w max carrier from amp.
Max peak input 120w.

That said run the Lee on Low into the amp and let er ripp.

Morons..they're everywhere!!!

Everything posted above is BS!!!...

I usually avoid these kinds of assinine posts...but it just annoys the daylights out of me when someone posts something they have absolutely no clue about...

I own a GL from Sparkys with the TGs.

First off...Sparkys does superb work...and they document everything performed on a specific radio...their reputation speaks for itself.

This is the best sounding and performing radio I have ever owned...

No splatter...cross mod...spurious transmissions...it is on freq...as tested.

Take your bashing ignorance to cbradiotalk.com...they love that kind of stupidity.

You will feel right at home and will be welcomed with open arms.

I have no clue? Really? I was not "bashing" anyone. I was simply stating the facts as to how Sparky "tunes" radios and the results of that "tune". How many "Sparky tuned" radios have you been inside to see what his "tune" consists of? Since you claim yours is 'No splatter...cross mod...spurious transmissions...it is on freq...as tested.' then I have to assume you have never taken the time to verify your claims. I have owned "Sparky tuned" radios in the past, and have had the "pleasure" of repairing several others that some of the locals purchased. They all came to me with the "warranty" seals intact, so I know they were all in the same condition as when they left Sparky's bench. Every single one of them had the trace on the board leading to the AMC cut. Every single one of them had the LPF coils spread. None of them were on frequency - some were as far off as 5kHz. Every single one of them had a modulated signal of 20kHz (or more) wide. Now, for a well educated person such as yourself that may be the definition of a well tuned and splatter free radio, but to me it's a prime example of a splatter box. Do yourself a favor and put that "Sparky tuned" splatter box of yours on a bench and see what it looks like on an oscope, or better yet a spectrum analyzer. Then you might begin to get a clue as to why I posted what I did. I felt that the OP deserved an honest answer, so that's what I gave him. If you can't deal with the truth that's your problem. Go back to Sparky's and drink some more koolaid...

Holy thread hijack:rolleyes:

Well I got the radio all hooked up and talked on it all weekend. I am no radio tech and don’t care to even attempt to get into that side of the discussion but I can say that I am getting great feedback from the local guys here with reports of loud clean audio, now I have not been on the receiving end of the transmissions but I feel pretty confident in the folks that were, some of these guys have been around a long time and have no problems telling you like it is, if it sounds bad they will let you know.

With that said is it on frequency I don’t know, was it tuned incorrectly I don’t know, it sounds good to who I am talking to and that is what I am concerned about.

Oh and by the way I am not bleeding over on anything in my house or either of my neighbors homes one of which is directly below my antenna. I am friends with both and asked them to let me know it the toaster was talking.

Thanks for the feedback.
Mike.
